As explained in Reliance Foundry’s article, “Foundries Are Facilities That Produce Metal Castings and Offer Casting-Related Services,” foundries are vital to our industrial development and everyday lives. A foundry is a facility where metal is melted, poured into molds, and allowed to solidify to create castings. Remarkably, 90% of all manufactured goods depend on metal castings, from engine components to the machinery used to produce consumer products.
The casting process involves several steps, including patternmaking, molding, melting, pouring, ejection, cleaning, fettling, and inspection. The process begins with carefully designed molds shaped by patterns—typically made from wood or metal. Metal is then melted in a furnace, heated above its melting point, and poured into the mold. After cooling and solidifying, the castings are cleaned, fettled to remove excess material, and inspected to ensure they meet precise specifications.
Foundries do more than produce raw castings; they also provide part design, prototyping, machining, and assembly services, offering comprehensive solutions that extend beyond casting.
