As stated by The Fabricator’s Waterjet Cutting Expert, achieving peak performance in waterjet machines is crucial for fabrication shops to maximize productivity and profitability. The waterjet system, composed of an ultrahigh-pressure pump, CNC machine, and cutting heads, relies on the setup and optimization of its components for optimal cutting rates.
Waterjet Basics The waterjet cutting pumps, ranging from 15 to 200 horsepower, with output pressures of 40,000 to over 60,000 PSI, play a critical role. Smaller pumps typically feed single cutting heads with small jets, while larger pumps can accommodate multiple heads with larger jets.
The pump supplies high-pressure water to the CNC machine’s on/off valve, which then enters the cutting head. Inside the cutting head, the orifice creates a high-velocity jet and draws garnet abrasive, forming a powerful mixture that exits as a high-velocity stream of water, abrasive, and air.
To optimize the waterjet system’s performance, factors such as orifice diameter, nozzle ID, abrasive flow, pump pressure, material machinability, thickness, and desired cut edge finish are crucial considerations.
